Brands are stable, the companies behind them are not
A gambling brand can look completely unchanged for a decade while the corporate structure underneath it is rebuilt more than once. This one is a clear example. The business began in May 1997 as Virtual Holdings Limited, listed in London in 2005, gathered its brands under a single name in 2006, renamed its casino product in 2010, and in March 2024 announced its intention to change the group name from 888 Holdings to evoke, subject to shareholder approval. Public reporting from December 2025 describes the group as considering a sale or breakup of parts of itself. None of that is visible from the front page, and some of it does matter to a customer.
What changes and what does not
Ownership events are frequently over-interpreted by customers and under-communicated by companies. These four points hold generally.
A renaming is a corporate act
Changing a group name does not by itself alter licences, terms or the legal entity you contracted with. It does mean older documents about the business use the previous name.
A sale can change the licensed entity
If a brand moves to a different owner, the company holding your account may change. That is the event worth watching, because it can affect terms and the route of redress.
History is written under old names
Enforcement actions, filings and reporting sit under whichever name was current at the time. Searching only the present name will miss most of the record.
You should be told, in writing
Material changes to who holds an account and on what terms are matters for notification. A change you learn about from a news article is worth querying directly.

What is the group called now?
Public reference sources consulted on 25 August 2026 record the company as evoke plc, formerly 888 Holdings Limited, and state that the intention to adopt the new name was announced in March 2024 subject to shareholder approval. The consumer brands were not renamed with it. That is the practical reason the corporate name and the casino name no longer match, and why searching for the older name is still necessary to find most of the historical record.
Which brands sit in the same group?
The same sources list a casino, a poker room and a sportsbook under the 888 name, alongside Mr Green and William Hill. The William Hill relationship followed a transaction approved by shareholders in May 2022 with a reported value of £1.95bn, which included a retail estate of more than 1,400 betting shops and took the group into shop-based betting for the first time. Group membership is a matter of public record and it is also subject to change, which is exactly the point of this piece.
Should reported breakup talk worry me as a customer?
It is not in itself a reason for alarm, and speculation reported in the press is not a completed transaction. What it justifies is attention: if ownership of a brand you use does change, read whatever notice you are sent rather than skimming it, check whether the licensed entity named in the terms has changed, and confirm that any limits or exclusions you have set remain in force. Those are small checks and they are much easier before a change than afterwards.
